Julia and Graeme’s Romantic Winter Wedding at Mythe Barn

Real Life Wedding - 07.02.18

After meeting as bridesmaid and best man at a friend’s wedding, it seemed only right that this romantic love story should result in a wedding. Graeme and Julia celebrated their winter wedding at Mythe Barn.

SETTING THE SCENE

After a romantic, surprise proposal while out walking their Labrador, Julia and Graeme started to plan their special day.

“We loved the idea of a winter wedding,” explains Julia. “We’re both hopelessly romantic about Christmas – a time of year that means quality time with family and friends.”

They decided to marry at St Peter’s Church in Market Bosworth and then started looking for the perfect venue for the celebration.

“Graeme and I knew instantly that Mythe was for us,” smiles Julia. “We loved the authentic yet modern and fresh feel of the barns and we could imagine ourselves partying there with our friends and family.”

THEME OF THE DAY

With grey a favourite colour of Julia’s and green a favourite of Graeme’s mum, dove grey and olive green were chosen as the basis for the colour scheme.

“‘My sister-in-law, Amy, designed our wedding stationery and her design of our initials became a focus for all our décor choices,” explains Julia.

Festoon lighting adorned the beams in The Oak Barn while silver lanterns framed the room and a collage of family wedding photographs added an element of personalisation.

Julia and her parents created the clever table plan, with Julia painting on the names of every guest as a homage to her late grandfather who was a sign writer.

Considering every possible detail, Julia’s mother spent every evening of the wedding planning knitting slippers for guests to wear following an evening on the dancefloor.

“This included ‘bespoke’ slippers for me and the bridesmaids,” says Julia. “I loved seeing our guests carefully choosing slippers to match their outfit, including the men!”

ALL ABOUT THE DRESS

Julia approached her dress shopping with trepidation.

“I’m a grumpy shopper and body confidence isn’t my strong point,” she explains.

Fortunately, her mother, sister and Emma from Miss Bush Bridal were there to help. Julia chose a beautiful gown by Jesus Peiro.

“It was the elegant, classic but slightly sexy dress I hadn’t realised I had dreamed of,” she says. “and it even had pockets!”

The four bridesmaids wore dove grey dresses by Ariella at House of Fraser, along with ivory faux fur jackets and open toe heels.

“The girls looked absolutely stunning and really gave the day that touch of vintage glamour,” says Julia.

Graeme had his heart set on wearing tweed and wanted to have something made specially for the day.

“At 6’7”, he has never owned a suit that fitted him well,” explains Julia.

The happy couple found Victor Valentine online who not only made a bespoke suit for Graeme but also hired out similar styles for his best man and ushers.

The groom certainly looked the part in a three-piece navy herringbone tweed suit, worn with a Hugo Boss shirt and light brown Barker shoes. Woolen mustard ties and pocket squares were a last-minute decision but proved successful, bringing a little sunshine in to the winter wedding!

“The boys looked so cool,” says Julia. “You would never guess that two weeks before we suffered a button melt down and had all the buttons changed from red to navy – one of the best decisions we made – thanks Mum!”

BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS AND CREATIVE CAKES

Once again, wonderful friends stepped in with their talents to design the cake and floral arrangements.

“Our friend Sarah created a scrumptious four-tier cake,” explains Julia. “She covered the tiers in ivory pearlescent icing and decorating with a sugar, heart-shaped mistletoe wreath. Wow!”

EVENING CELEBRATIONS

As day turned to evening, the party started with the newlyweds taking to the floor for their first dance to ‘Do You Love Me’ from Dirty Dancing. Live band, The Kitts Project then sang and entertained guests through the night.

“I loved dancing with the saxophonist while the singers grooved in the middle of the dancefloor,” says Julia Julia. “It was amazing. We danced the night away.”

JULIA’S TOP TIP

“The best thing I did in the lead up to the wedding was create a spreadsheet timeline for the day – this included every bit of info needed, including timings, contact details, things not to forget etc. I gave it to all the bridal party and Molly (our wonderful wedding coordinator at Mythe Barn) and knew that in their safe hands Graeme and I could relax.”
