University sweethearts Ria and Chris married in June 2016 with an informal, beautiful country wedding. Their main wish… for their guests to relax and enjoy every moment. At this day full of happiness and thoughtful details, we’re sure they did!
The moment Ria and Chris drove up the driveway to Mythe Barn, they thought it could be ‘the one’, and their thoughts were confirmed as soon as they walked through the door. ‘Little did I know,’ smiles Ria ‘that while I was walking around the venue, Chris had reserved a date!’ The happy couple loved the simplicity of Mythe Barn, and felt that every space took their breath away. ‘It was the perfect size for us too’ says Ria.
Ria and Chris chose a rustic theme to suit their barn wedding venue. Sage green featured in the colour scheme, with neutral, earthy tones and a hint of delicate pink. The décor focused around hessian, wood and greenery, bringing the outside in to the venue. ‘We had hundreds of Mason jars filled with wild flowers and wine bottles adorned with hessian and twine’ explains Ria. ‘Wooden centerpieces featured on the tables and we added some hanging hearts made from twigs.’
Ria’s Mori Lee dress was the first gown she pulled off the rail, but one of the last she tried on. ‘I tried around 25 dresses in different styles,’ explains Ria. ‘Nothing felt right until the last one which was simple, stunning and fit me perfectly.’ Ria’s grandmother had bought her first ever Sunday dress, her prom dress and a dress for he 18th birthday, so she continued the tradition by treating her to her wedding dress. The subtle detail on Ria’s gown was complemented by elegant accessories and embellished sandals by Jenny Packham.
The three adult bridesmaids wore one shoulder chiffon maxi dresses in a flattering shade of sage green, with a flower detail on the shoulder to match Ria’s gown.
And as for the groom… Chris and his ushers wore blue suits from Next with perfectly co-ordinating pocket squares and ties.
When it came to flowers, Ria carried a wild flower bouquet of pink roses, gypsophila, daisies and other beautiful wild blooms. Hand tied with hessian, a small locket with a photo of Ria’s dad was attached. ‘He passed away a few years ago, but I still wanted him to walk down the aisle with me’ says Ria. In keeping with the ‘just picked’ look, the bridesmaids carried posies of gypsophila tied with hessian. Buttonholes also featured gypsophila, and the groom’s buttonhole was a miniature version of Ria’s bouquet.
Ria and Chris said their vows in a civil ceremony in the romantic Oak Barn at Mythe Barn. ‘As we met on a music course at university, music plays a big part in our lives’ explains Ria. ‘A string quartet played for our ceremony and drinks reception, a surprise for our guests and a special detail for us’.
Following their ceremony, a drinks reception was held in the sunny courtyard at Mythe Barn. Perfectly fitting for a summer wedding, guests were treated to Pimms and a beer barrel serving cider and beers. The expert on-site catering created delicious canapés included beetroot tart and minted lamb. Moving inside for the wedding breakfast, Ria and Chris chose family favourites for their menu – paté followed by roast beef and a trio of desserts. ‘Guests still talk about the amazing roast potatoes!’ laughs Ria.
Of course, we can’t forget the beautiful cake, a pretty three-tier delight with sugar flowers to match the wedding blooms. Choosing flavours to suit all their guests, the bottom tier was fruit cake, the middle a lemon sponge and the top tier was marble cake. Presentation is key, and Ria and Chris displayed their cake on a wooden crate with ‘Mr & Mrs Atherley’ painted on the side.
As day turned to evening, music was a crucial to the celebrations and a live band called ‘Monsta Ball Rock’ entertained the guests. ‘The drummer and bass player are great friends of ours from university’ says Ria, ‘so it was wonderful to have them perform at our wedding’. Ria plays and teaches saxophone so was surprised and delighted when the band asked them to perform a song with them. ‘It’s a moment that will never be forgotten’ she smiles. A Barbecue proved the perfect finale.
“Don’t focus on the little details. On the day, you won’t even notice.”
“When I saw Ria walk down the aisle, I was totally blown away’ says Chris. ‘It’s a moment I’ll never forget. In fact, I enjoyed every second of the day. There’s not I thing I would change!”
