Our Guide To Planning A Winter Wedding

Inspiration – 12.04.23

Theme your day around the season you’re set to marry, because there’s nothing more romantic than a winter wedding day…

It’s the season of sparkle! A winter wedding calls for all the glitz and glam. From the decor to the attire, you’ll be drawn to sequins and sparkle, opulent colour schemes, luxurious fabrics and twinkling fairy lights to make your barn wedding venue dazzle. Warming drinks and rich winter dishes will please guests, while seasonal delights, such as mistletoe and fir trees, will make your winter wedding one to remember. Here, we share some ideas to inspire you to make your seasonal soirée at Mythe Barn merry and bright.

Winter wedding wardrobe

Winter weddings call for a formal dress code. Think full, sweeping trains, lavish lace, voluminous ballgowns or sparkling sequins. This is the season to go all out with your wedding gown. Bridesmaids can step out in full-length, velvet gowns while groomsmen adorn formal black tie. Ask your guests to dress in their finery too!

A warm welcome

As guests arrive at your winter wedding reception, greet them with a selection of warming canapés and hot drinks. Offer mulled wine or mulled cider alongside the more traditional glass of Prosecco. Warm canapés will go down a treat during the colder months, from smoked haddock tartlets to crispy arancini. Add a bit of fun to your canapé options with mini fish and chip cones or curried lamb with mint yoghurt dip.

Colour schemes

Go bold with your winter wedding colour scheme. Mythe Barn is a beautiful, neutral canvas for you to introduce any colour scheme you wish The season calls for classic navy, deep reds and elegant emerald paired with metallic touches. Rich burgundy and blush is a classic combination that works perfectly at a barn wedding venue like Mythe Barn. Glitzy gold is a classic choice for winter weddings, adding a touch of luxury and lots of glamour. From yellow gold to rose gold, pick your tone and use it through your stationery, jewellery, cake details and tablescapes. If you’re tying the knot near Christmas, go traditional with festive green or romantic red – If there was ever a good excuse to buy a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes, this is it! You simply need those red soles to tie the colour scheme together. Mythe Barn sets the scene perfectly with a Christmas tree creating a jolly atmosphere at the venue.

Light the way

As with all seasons, it’s often the smaller details that make all the difference. Clever lighting is key at this time of year, with pretty fairy lights strung along beans and flickering candles dotted along table tops setting a romantic scene and creating an inviting atmosphere. Make a feature space with large church candles and light-up entrances and outdoor pathways with large lanterns.

A hearty feast

Comfort food is always a winner at a winter wedding. Choose rich, indulgent dishes to serve during your wedding breakfast. Start with a hot smoked fillet of salmon, or perhaps a ravioli of king prawns. Followed by a fillet of Scotch beef served with creamy dauphinoise potatoes and seasonal vegetables. If you prefer the idea of a less formal dining style, we think you’ll love the Mythe Barn sharing boards, whether you chose a stuffed saddle of lamb, roast rib of beef or vegetable wellington. Nominate one guest from each table to carve and share out the mouthwatering mains, providing some added entertainment for guests during the wedding breakfast too. And, you can’t forget the dessert! Sweet and full of flavour, chocolate lovers can’t fail to enjoy the Mythe Barn warm triple-chocolate brownie. And, if there is just too much choice and too many taste buds to please, how about a trio of desserts? Creamy panna cotta, a dark chocolate tart and a classic treacle sponge are sure to delight guests.

Festive Favours

Get creative with your favours, from personalised baubles to individually wrapped miniature Christmas puddings. You might give sparklers as favours, for guests to use at the end of the night in a sparkler send-off. Adding to the winter wedding theme, tiny fir trees add to the decor as well as being something guests can take away and display in their homes.

Frosty florals

Embrace the season with winter blooms alongside fresh foliage, pinecones, berries and even feathers for elegant arrangements. You might even extend the natural decorations to add interest to your place settings with glitter-covered pinecones to sprigs of mistletoe. Tree stumps, twigs and chopped logs also bring that rustic, winter style into a barn wedding venue. Wreaths make a lovely addition to your floral decorations as do miniature Christmas trees acting as centrepieces and adding a festive fragrance too.

Sip, sip, hooray

As the evening draws in, serve a round of hot drinks. In the period after dinner, while guests are letting their meal go down and you’re capturing a few extra photographs as newlyweds before the evening reception begins, keep guests entertained with an extra round of drinks. Think, a glass of mulled wine or a boozy coffee. You could even have a ‘top your choc’ station in the barn wedding venue, serving hot chocolates with a selection of toppings, for guests to keep cosy at your winter wedding.

Star-lit evening buffet

As day turns to evening, head out to the romantically lit courtyard where you’ll find the Outdoor Kitchen. Serving up a selection of options including freshly-cooked, wood-fired pizzas straight from the pizza oven to theatrical and delicious street food, the evening dining options become part of the entertainment. Enjoy a late-night snack under the stars before heading straight back to the dance floor.

REAL WINTER WEDDING INSPIRATION

Just two days before Christmas, Rose and Daniel’s beautiful wedding at Mythe Barn offers real inspiration for a winter celebration.

Marrying so close to Christmas, this romantic winter wedding was certainly deserving of some bling! The happy couple chose a deep ‘masala’ wine colour alongside dusky pink and Champagne gold to create their elegant winter wonderland, complementing the neutral tones of Mythe Barn.

A barn wedding venue

The couple fell in love with their barn wedding venue as soon as they set eyes on Mythe Barn. “As soon as we approached Mythe down the long, rural driveway, we got butterflies’ smiles Rose. ‘The beautiful venue, outstanding customer service and signature chocolate brownies sealed the deal for us!’

The lovely Christmas trees in The Grain Store provided a great backdrop to the decorations, to which Rose and Daniel added fresh flowers, blush pink sequin table runners, gold candlesticks, tea light holders and copper terrariums filled with roses – along with copper fairy lights of course!

A magical winter theme

Rose wowed in a spectacular mermaid-style, lace gown completed with a full-length veil adorned with scattered crystals. Daniel and his ushers wore brown tweed suits, while the bridesmaids stepped down the aisle in deep red dresses.

The winter season allowed this happy couple the opportunity to serve deliciously warming welcome drinks and a sumptuous dinner. Winter Pimms greeted the guests alongside four hot canapés. For the wedding breakfast, guests were treated to a ham hock croquette followed by fillet steak with dauphinoise potatoes. For pudding… it just had to be chocolate brownie served with mango sauce and cider honeycomb.

Rose and Daniel gave their guests jars of their traditional Christmas Eve hot chocolate with marshmallows to take home and enjoy, really adding to their winter wedding theme.
